Home remedies for gout pain

Short answer
For gout pain, rest and cool the joint gently, while arranging medical advice because home care does not remove urate inflammation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Protect the joint
- Reduce weight-bearing and pressure during severe pain
- Cooling
- Use a cloth-wrapped cold pack briefly
Why gout hurts
Gout pain comes from an inflammatory reaction to urate crystals inside a joint. The area may become hot, red, swollen, and extremely tender, making a blanket or light touch uncomfortable. Episodes may affect the foot, ankle, knee, or another joint. Joint Pain and Joint Swelling can occur with several conditions, so a new attack should not be self-diagnosed.
Ways to make a flare more comfortable
Keep weight off the painful joint when possible and support it in a relaxed position. Elevate the limb and place a cold pack wrapped in cloth over the area for brief intervals. Wear loose footwear if the foot is involved. Drink normally unless you have been told to limit fluids. Avoid alcohol during the flare. Do not take someone else's medicine or combine pain medicines without checking that they are safe for you, especially with Chronic Kidney Disease or other long-term conditions.
Do not wait for home care when
Seek prompt medical advice for a first attack, pain that is not settling, repeated attacks, or symptoms affecting your ability to walk. Urgent assessment is needed for fever, chills, rapidly spreading redness, pus, or feeling faint or very unwell, since an infected joint can look like gout. New knee symptoms can be discussed alongside Knee Pain or Knee Swelling information, but those pages do not replace an examination.
Useful questions
Ask what confirms gout, which pain treatment fits your medical history, whether urate-lowering treatment is appropriate, and how to respond at the next flare.

Questions people ask
Should I massage a painful gout joint?
Avoid forceful massage during an acute flare because pressure can intensify tenderness and irritate the area.
Is gout pain always in the big toe?
No. Gout may affect the ankle, knee, foot, or another joint, and other conditions can cause similar pain.
