Home remedies for GERD symptoms

Short answer
Home measures for GERD symptoms include smaller meals, avoiding personal triggers, staying upright after eating, and raising the head of the bed; frequent or severe symptoms need medical advice.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- After meals
- Remain upright and avoid lying down soon after eating.
- Track
- Record foods, timing, posture, and symptoms to identify personal patterns.
Why reflux symptoms happen
GERD occurs when stomach contents move back towards the food pipe. This may cause burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, regurgitation, throat irritation, or symptoms that disturb sleep. Triggers vary: large meals, late eating, alcohol, smoking, tight clothing, and lying down soon after food can worsen symptoms. Reflux can also occur without obvious heartburn.
Measures to try
Eat slowly and choose smaller portions. Notice whether fatty foods, spicy foods, coffee, chocolate, mint, or acidic drinks trigger symptoms, then limit only the items that affect you. Leave several hours between the evening meal and lying down. Stay upright after eating, loosen tight waistbands, and raise the upper body during sleep rather than stacking loose pillows. A pharmacist can advise whether an antacid or other medicine is suitable, especially if you are pregnant or take regular medicines.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for new or severe chest tightness, pressure, breathlessness, fainting, sweating, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw. Arrange medical review for trouble swallowing, repeated vomiting, vomit that contains blood, black stools, unexplained weight loss, or symptoms that keep returning. A persistent cough or sleep disruption also deserves assessment because reflux may not be the only cause.
Questions to ask
Could these symptoms be reflux or another condition? Which triggers and medicines should I review? Do I need a treatment trial or further assessment? What should I do if symptoms wake me at night?
