Home remedies for croup

Short answer
Keep a child with croup calm and upright, offer small sips of fluid, and seek urgent help for noisy breathing at rest or signs of breathing strain.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What croup does
Croup is swelling around the voice box and upper airway, usually after a viral infection. It can cause a barking cough, hoarse voice, and a harsh high-pitched sound when breathing in. Symptoms may sound worse when a child is upset or crying. Fever can occur, but the key safety question is how comfortably the child is breathing, not how loud the cough sounds.
Comfort measures
Hold your child upright and speak quietly to reduce distress. Offer frequent small sips of fluid and let them rest. Keep prescribed medicines available and use them exactly as directed. Cool fresh air may feel soothing for some children, but avoid smoke, steam burns, and hot vapour devices. Watch the child closely, including during sleep, because breathing effort can change. A clinician may recommend treatment such as a steroid or nebuliser treatment when swelling is significant.
When it is urgent
Call emergency services if the child struggles for each breath, has ribs or neck pulling in, develops blue or grey lips, becomes unusually sleepy, cannot swallow saliva, or pauses in breathing. Seek urgent assessment for a harsh breathing noise while resting, worsening symptoms, or poor drinking with fewer wet nappies. A child-health consultation is appropriate when the diagnosis is uncertain or episodes recur.
Questions for the clinician
How can I recognise noisy breathing at rest? Should my child have an emergency medicine plan? What should I do if the cough returns overnight, and when is nebuliser treatment considered?

Questions people ask
Does steam treat croup?
Hot steam can cause burns and is not recommended; calm positioning and medical assessment are safer responses.
Should I wake a child with croup?
Follow the clinician's advice and check breathing, colour, and comfort; seek help if breathing becomes difficult or noisy at rest.
