Short answer

For a blocked nose, use saline spray or rinsing, drink fluids, avoid smoke, and rest; seek medical care if breathing, facial pain, or symptoms become severe.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Simple option
Saline spray or a correctly prepared rinse
Avoid
Smoke and unclean rinse water
Review needed
Persistent one-sided blockage or sleep pauses

Why your nose may feel blocked

Nasal congestion happens when the lining swells or mucus narrows the nasal passages. A Common Cold often causes temporary blockage. Allergic Rhinitis or House Dust Mite Allergy may bring sneezing and itchy, watery eyes. Sinusitis can add facial pressure and thick discharge; Chronic Sinusitis causes symptoms that continue or recur. Night-time blockage may also affect sleep and should be discussed if there is loud snoring or pauses in breathing.

Comfort measures

Use a ready-made saline spray or rinse according to its instructions. If making a rinse, use sterile or previously boiled and cooled water and clean the device carefully. Rest, drink regularly, and avoid cigarette smoke and strong fragrances. Raising the head slightly during sleep may feel more comfortable. A pharmacist can advise about Allergy Medication, but check suitability if you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, pregnancy, or take other medicines.

When to get medical help

Arrange review for blockage that persists, repeatedly returns, affects one side, causes reduced smell, or comes with recurrent sinus symptoms. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, swelling around an eye, severe headache, confusion, stiff neck, or rapidly worsening facial swelling. A blocked nose with sleep pauses or marked daytime sleepiness also deserves assessment.

Questions to ask

Ask whether your symptoms fit a cold, allergy, or Sinusitis and whether a nasal examination is needed. Mention duration, one-sided symptoms, discharge colour, facial pain, smell changes, snoring, sleep pauses, and medicines already tried.

Questions people ask

Can I use a decongestant spray for a blocked nose?

A pharmacist can advise, but some sprays are intended only for short use and may be unsuitable with certain conditions or medicines.

Is coloured mucus always a reason for antibiotics?

No. Mucus colour alone does not establish a bacterial infection; duration, pain, fever, and examination findings matter.
