Home remedies for blackheads

Short answer
Gentle cleansing and a suitable acne routine may improve blackheads, while squeezing and harsh scrubs can irritate skin.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful
- Gentle cleansing, moisturiser and a steady routine
- Avoid
- Squeezing, lemon, toothpaste and rough scrubs
What a blackhead is
A blackhead is an open comedone: a pore filled with oil and shed skin cells whose surface darkens when exposed to air. It is not dirt, so scrubbing harder does not remove the plug safely. Several blackheads, whiteheads and inflamed spots may fit comedonal acne or broader acne.
Home care that is kinder to skin
Wash gently twice daily and after heavy sweating, then use non-comedogenic moisturiser and daytime sun protection. A topical retinoid or another acne ingredient may help, but introduce one product at a time and follow its directions; dryness and irritation can occur. Avoid squeezing, pore strips, abrasive scrubs, toothpaste and lemon. Keep hair products away from acne-prone skin and clean items that touch your face.
When to get professional help
See a dermatologist if blackheads persist despite a consistent routine, cover a large area, or leave marks, painful spots or scarring. Professional extraction can reduce injury when performed correctly. Ask for medical advice before using prescription-strength treatment if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, breastfeeding, or taking other medicines. Severe or widespread acne may need a broader plan.
Questions for your doctor
Are these blackheads or another type of acne? Which topical retinoid strength and schedule suit my skin? Would an acne extraction facial help, and how should I manage irritation?

Questions people ask
Why do blackheads look black?
The material in an open pore darkens after contact with air; the colour does not mean the pore contains dirt.
Can steam remove blackheads?
Steam may soften surface oil temporarily, but it does not clear the plug reliably and hot steam can burn or irritate skin.
