Home remedies for an atopic eczema rash

Atopic eczema is an inflammatory condition linked with a fragile skin barrier. A flare can look red, dry, scaly, swollen, or cracked and may itch intensely. Scratching briefly relieves the sensation but damages the surface, allowing more irritation. Triggers vary and can include fragranced products, heat, sweat, rough fabrics, and personal allergens. Use prescribed medicines exactly as directed; do not substitute kitchen ingredients or strong topical products.

Contact a clinician when the rash is extensive, severe, recurrent, or interfering with sleep or daily activity. Get prompt medical help if it becomes painful, hot, rapidly swollen, oozing, blistered, or covered with yellow crusts, or if fever develops.
