What should you know about HMB-45 melanoma?

HMB-45 is an immunohistochemistry stain used on tissue in a laboratory. It helps pathologists identify cells showing melanocytic features. A positive or negative stain does not, by itself, establish the stage, depth, or outlook of a melanoma. The diagnosis combines the microscopic appearance with the specimen details and the dermatologist’s assessment.

Melanoma can begin in an existing mole or appear as a new changing pigmented spot. The condition may be described as malignant melanoma or skin cancer in a mole. Further assessment may be needed to determine whether abnormal cells are limited to the skin or have spread to nearby or distant sites.

Ask for the complete pathology report rather than relying on the marker name alone. Clarify whether the lesion was fully removed, whether the report gives tumour thickness or ulceration, and whether another procedure is advised. Depending on the findings, care may include Surgical Excision or Skin Cancer Surgery. A Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy may be discussed for selected melanomas.

Protect the area from further sun exposure, avoid picking at a healing wound, and keep scheduled appointments. If treatment is recommended, the team can explain why surgery, Immunotherapy, or monitoring fits the pathology and examination.

Arrange prompt dermatology review for a mole or pigmented mark that changes in size, shape, colour, or texture, or that repeatedly bleeds, crusts, or fails to heal. Seek urgent medical help for uncontrolled bleeding, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading redness with fever, or severe pain after a biopsy or operation. New neurological symptoms such as weakness, confusion, seizures, or a severe persistent headache need urgent assessment because advanced melanoma can rarely involve the brain.

Ask: What does the entire pathology report show? Was the lesion removed with clear margins? Do I need a wider excision or further staging? Which follow-up schedule suits my findings? What changes should prompt an earlier visit?
