What should you know about a hives test?

A clinician looks at the shape, movement, colour, and duration of the welts and asks whether they itch, swell, or leave marks. The timing of meals, medicines, infections, heat, cold, pressure, exercise, and emotional or physical stress can help identify a pattern. A photograph is useful when the skin has cleared before the appointment. Testing is more likely when the history suggests a particular allergy, another illness, or a physical trigger; broad testing may not explain recurring hives.

Record when each episode begins and fades, take clear photographs, and list every prescription, supplement, pain reliever, food, skin product, and recent illness. Note swelling of the lips or eyelids, breathing changes, stomach symptoms, fever, bruising, or pain. Do not deliberately repeat a suspected food, medicine, or exposure to provoke a rash. Ask before changing an antihistamine, because stopping or continuing it can affect how the clinician examines the episode.

Testing should never delay emergency care. Seek immediate help for hives with tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or sudden weakness. Arrange a timely review when welts recur, interfere with sleep, follow a new medicine, or leave bruising or pain. A rash that stays fixed, blisters, or comes with fever may need assessment for a condition other than ordinary hives.
