Hives moving around the body: why it happens

A hive is a raised area caused by temporary widening and leakage from small blood vessels in the skin. One welt may flatten while another develops on the arm, trunk, face, or leg. This changing pattern is common with hives and does not mean the skin problem is travelling through the body as an infection. It can itch, sting, or burn.

Deeper swelling may accompany the welts, particularly around the eyelids, lips, hands, or feet. Keep track of whether marks fade, leave bruising, or stay fixed, because those details help a clinician consider other causes of a skin rash.

Use cool compresses, avoid hot water and rubbing, and wear loose clothing. Consider recent heat, exercise, pressure, illness, foods, and medicines as possible clues, but do not make major treatment changes alone. A pharmacist or clinician can advise about oral antihistamine treatment and safe dosing for your circumstances. Photograph different stages if the sites change before an appointment.

Keep the skin comfortable with gentle, unperfumed products. Scratching can increase irritation and make it harder to judge whether marks are changing.

Call emergency services for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, faintness, confusion, or repeated vomiting with hives. Arrange a medical review for frequent episodes, extensive swelling, painful lesions, fever, bruising, or welts that stay in one location. These features need assessment even if some areas are already clear.
