What should you know about hives in mouth?

Hives are raised, itchy welts on the skin that can change location. A sensation of bumps, burning, or soreness inside the mouth may instead be irritation, ulcers, infection, dental trauma, or another condition. Swelling of the lips, tongue, cheeks, or throat can occur with angioedema and may accompany hives during an allergic reaction.

Think about timing: a new food, medicine, dental product, or insect sting can be relevant. Do not use the timing alone to diagnose the cause. A clinician needs to assess mouth changes, especially when swallowing or breathing feels different.

Stop eating or using a suspected new product if it is safe to do so, and keep a record of the exposure and symptoms. Do not deliberately taste a suspected food again. Stay with the affected person and keep them upright if breathing is comfortable.

Do not place creams or unprescribed medicines inside the mouth. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about any antihistamine, particularly for a child, pregnancy, or someone taking other medicines. Follow an existing allergy action plan if one has been prescribed.

Call emergency services immediately for tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, wheezing, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, drooling, dizziness, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. A mild-looking skin rash does not make airway symptoms safe to watch at home.

Get medical assessment for persistent mouth sores, fever, dehydration, severe pain, or a rash after a new medicine. Recurrent hives without airway symptoms still merit a planned review to identify patterns and treatment options.

Ask whether the mouth finding is swelling, ulceration, or irritation; whether a recent food or medicine could be involved; what emergency signs to watch for; and whether you need an allergy or dermatology review.
