Hives around the mouth

Urticaria causes itchy, raised welts that may appear around the lips and then fade or move. Deeper swelling of the lips is angioedema and can happen alongside hives. Food, medicine, toothpaste, lip products, saliva, contact with an irritant, infection, heat, or pressure may be relevant. Redness or scaling that remains exactly where a product touched may be contact irritation rather than hives. The appearance alone cannot identify the trigger.

Stop newly introduced lip, dental, or facial products and gently wash the area. Avoid scratching, licking, spicy foods, and very hot drinks if they worsen the irritation. Take a clear photograph and write down recent foods, medicines, products, and timing. Ask a pharmacist or clinician whether an oral antihistamine fits your age, health conditions, pregnancy status, and other medicines. Do not apply a prescribed-for-someone-else cream around the mouth.

Emergency help is needed for tongue or throat swelling, trouble breathing, hoarse voice, difficulty swallowing, faintness, or rapidly spreading facial swelling. Seek prompt assessment for painful blisters, pus, fever, eye involvement, or a rash that remains fixed and worsens. Book a review for repeated episodes or symptoms that do not settle.
