When hives feel hot to the touch

Urticaria produces raised welts as chemical signals make small blood vessels leak fluid into the skin. That process can cause warmth, itching, stinging, or a burning sensation. Individual welts often change shape or location rather than staying fixed. Pressure, scratching, heat, exercise, illness, medicines, or foods can contribute. A fixed patch that is increasingly painful, bruised, blistered, or associated with fever is less typical of ordinary hives and should be checked.

Cool the area with a clean, cool compress and wear breathable clothing. Avoid hot showers, vigorous rubbing, and scratching, which can intensify the sensation. Photograph changing areas and record foods, medicines, illness, exertion, and exposures around the onset. An oral antihistamine may help some people, but a pharmacist or clinician should confirm the choice and directions for your circumstances. Do not apply a new cream near the eyes or mouth without advice.

Get emergency help for breathing trouble, throat tightness, difficulty swallowing, dizziness, collapse, or swelling of the lips or tongue. Seek same-day care if the hot area is very painful, rapidly spreading, blistering, bruising, or accompanied by fever or marked weakness. Contact a clinician when the eruption repeatedly returns, does not settle, or began soon after a new medicine.
