Hirsutism and electrolysis: what to know

How the structures involved in Hirsutism differ from normal

Short answer

Electrolysis treats individual hair follicles with a fine probe, so it can suit selected hirsutism areas while the underlying cause is assessed separately.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How electrolysis fits hirsutism care

During electrolysis, a trained practitioner places a fine probe into an individual follicle and applies energy intended to disable that follicle. Because hairs are treated one at a time, the method is often considered for smaller areas or hairs that are not suitable for light-based treatment.

Electrolysis changes treated follicles but does not investigate why new coarse hair is appearing. If growth is widespread or changing quickly, a clinician should review the pattern for hirsutism and possible hormone-related causes before or alongside cosmetic treatment.

Preparing for treatment

Choose a qualified practitioner and disclose medicines, skin conditions, a tendency to form raised scars, and recent tanning or irritation. Avoid plucking if the practitioner asks you to leave the hair available for targeting; follow their specific preparation instructions.

Afterward, mild redness or sensitivity can occur. Keep the area clean, avoid picking, and follow advice about makeup, friction and sun exposure. Compare progress by the treated area and regrowth pattern, not by one session. [Laser Hair Removal](/treatments/laser-and-energy/laser-hair-removal/) is another option to discuss, and [Hirsutism](/conditions/hirsutism/) explains the condition.

When to seek care

Ask for medical assessment when new coarse hair develops rapidly, spreads beyond the treated area, or accompanies irregular periods, severe acne, voice deepening, scalp hair loss or increased muscle bulk. Contact the treatment provider about worsening swelling, blistering, spreading redness, pus or persistent pain after a session.

Questions for your doctor

Is electrolysis appropriate for my hair and skin? Should I have a hormone assessment first? How should I prepare between sessions? Which aftercare changes are expected, and which require review?

No. It targets selected follicles; a separate medical assessment may be needed for the reason new hair is developing.

Can electrolysis be used on facial hair?

It may be suitable for selected facial hairs, with the choice guided by skin condition, hair pattern and practitioner assessment.
