What should you know about hip pain and ovarian cancer?

Pain near the hip may come from muscles, joints, the spine, bowel, urinary organs, or reproductive organs. Ovarian cancer can present with pelvic pressure, abdominal discomfort, bloating, changes in bowel or bladder habits, or feeling full sooner; pain may be referred toward the hip or back. These symptoms are not specific to cancer, and a symptom pattern needs clinical context.

A clinician may ask when the pain began, whether it is one-sided, what changes it, and whether menstrual, digestive, urinary, or general symptoms occur with it. Examination and imaging help decide whether the ovaries or another structure needs closer assessment.

Arrange a medical review if hip or pelvic pain persists, returns, or changes without a clear explanation. Record its location, severity, timing, triggers, and associated symptoms. Depending on the examination, a pelvic ultrasound may be used to assess the ovaries and pelvis. Further tests, including tissue or tumour profiling, are considered only when clinically appropriate.

If ovarian cancer is diagnosed, treatment choices may include surgery, chemotherapy, or supportive care. The plan depends on the findings, symptoms, general health, and personal priorities.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe pelvic or hip pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, repeated vomiting, fever with worsening pain, or a swollen and rigid abdomen. Contact your clinician promptly for persistent bloating, increasing abdominal size, unexplained weight change, or ongoing pelvic symptoms. Urgency depends on the symptom pattern and severity, not on assuming a cancer diagnosis.

Ask what other causes of hip pain should be considered, whether a pelvic examination or ultrasound is appropriate, and which changes should trigger urgent review. If ovarian cancer is found, ask how surgery, chemotherapy, genetic testing, and symptom support fit into the plan.
