What should you know about hip osteosarcoma?

Osteosarcoma develops from bone-forming cells. Around the hip, it may cause persistent or increasing pain, swelling, stiffness, or difficulty walking. These symptoms also occur with many non-cancerous problems, so hip pain does not by itself indicate osteosarcoma. A clinical examination and imaging help show where an abnormal area is located and whether nearby structures are involved.

A biopsy examines a sample of tissue and is planned carefully by the specialist team, because its route can affect later surgery. The diagnosis and extent of disease guide discussions about chemotherapy and tumour removal surgery.

Keep appointments with the orthopaedic oncology or sarcoma team and bring your medication list and previous scans. Until the bone has been assessed, ask whether you should limit impact, heavy lifting, or weight-bearing. Do not arrange an unplanned biopsy or procedure without coordination from the specialist team.

Treatment may combine chemotherapy with surgery. The plan depends on the tumour's position, size, relationship to nerves and blood vessels, and whether it has spread. Rehabilitation can support strength, mobility, and safe use of the hip after treatment.

Seek prompt medical review for persistent hip or thigh pain, swelling, night pain, or a new limp, particularly when symptoms are progressing. Get urgent care after a sudden severe increase in pain, a new inability to stand or walk, visible deformity, or numbness and weakness in the leg. A weakened bone can need protection even before the diagnosis is settled.

Ask where the suspected tumour is, which scans are needed, who will perform and interpret the biopsy, and how the findings affect surgery or chemotherapy. Ask about weight-bearing, pain control, fertility considerations, and rehabilitation during treatment.
