Symptoms of hip bone metastases

When cancer spreads to bone near the hip, pain may be deep, aching, or worse with standing, walking, or turning in bed. Some people notice pain at rest or at night. Stiffness, a limp, reduced range of movement, or difficulty climbing stairs can occur. A weakened bone may break after a minor injury or ordinary movement.

Numbness, tingling, or weakness in a leg can suggest pressure on nerves or nearby structures. Breast cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and other cancers can spread to bone, but hip pain alone cannot identify its cause.

Tell your oncology team about new pain, a change in walking, or pain that is not controlled by your current plan. Assessment may include an examination and imaging chosen to look at bone strength and the source of symptoms. Until reviewed, use walking aids if advised and avoid activities that sharply increase pain.

Treatment may include cancer pain management, palliative radiotherapy for a painful area, or bone-strengthening therapy. The plan can also address mobility, fall prevention, and the risk of fracture.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe hip or thigh pain, inability to stand or bear weight, or a limb that appears shortened or turned. Contact your cancer team immediately for new leg weakness, numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or rapidly worsening back pain, because nerve or spinal pressure needs prompt assessment.

Ask which scan is needed, whether the bone is at risk of fracture, and what movement is safe. Ask how pain will be treated, whether radiotherapy or bone-strengthening therapy could help, and which symptoms should send you to emergency care.
