What should you know about a HINT hearing test?

A hearing assessment may include questions about your symptoms, an ear examination, listening to tones through headphones, and repeating or identifying spoken words. The clinician records which sounds you detect and how speech is understood in the test conditions. Results can suggest a problem in the outer, middle, or inner ear, but they must be interpreted with your history.

Reduced hearing can have a simple cause such as earwax buildup, or may relate to inner-ear conditions such as Meniere's disease. A test result does not by itself explain why hearing changed or decide which treatment you need.

Tell the examiner when the hearing change began, whether it affects one or both ears, and whether you have ringing, pressure, discharge, pain, or dizziness. Avoid loud noise immediately before testing when possible. Bring hearing devices and note any difficulty understanding speech in groups or on the telephone. Follow-up may involve wax management, repeat testing, or specialist review.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change with severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache, or new neurological symptoms. Prompt review is appropriate for ear discharge, significant pain, injury, or a rapidly worsening change. Do not insert objects into the ear while waiting for assessment.

Ask what the test measured, whether wax or another ear problem affected the result, and whether both ears performed similarly. Clarify whether you need repeat testing, an ear examination, specialist referral, or advice about hearing protection.
