What should you know about high systolic blood pressure symptoms?

Some people report headache, dizziness, blurred vision, palpitations, or feeling unwell when pressure is high, but these symptoms are not specific and can have many causes. High systolic pressure itself may be present without any sensation at all.

A sudden severe rise with chest pain, breathlessness, confusion, a seizure, or new weakness is different from an incidental high reading. The combination of the symptom and the reading matters. A transient ischaemic attack or stroke can begin with sudden speech or movement changes and requires urgent assessment.

Rest quietly before measuring. Keep your arm supported, use the correct cuff size, and take another reading without repeatedly checking every few seconds. Note symptoms, the readings, prescribed medicines, and recent caffeine, exercise, pain, or illness.

Book a review for repeated high results, even if you feel well. A clinician may check your technique, review medicines, and assess risks affecting the heart, kidneys, and blood vessels. Continue prescribed treatment as directed and do not change the dose based on one reading.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden facial drooping, one-sided weakness, difficulty speaking, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, severe breathlessness, or a sudden severe headache. Keep the person safe and note when the symptom started; do not drive them yourself if they may be having a stroke.
