What should you know about high porosity hair breakage?

Porosity describes how readily the hair shaft takes in and releases water. Cuticle damage from bleaching, relaxing, repeated coloring, heat, friction, or rough detangling can leave strands porous and fragile. Signs include split ends, short broken pieces, tangling, rough texture, and uneven length. Breakage happens along the shaft; shedding is a whole strand released from the follicle.

Use a gentle cleanser and conditioner, detangle from the ends upward with a wide-tooth comb, and blot rather than rub with a towel. Reduce high heat and tight styles, and use a heat protectant when styling. A leave-in conditioner can reduce friction; trim split ends when needed. Avoid adding repeated chemical processing to already fragile sections.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if breakage is sudden, accompanied by scalp scale, itching, pain, sores, or smooth patches of hair loss, or if hair is thinning despite gentler care. Scalp ringworm and traction alopecia can need specific treatment, so do not assume every change is caused by porosity.

Ask whether the problem is shaft breakage or follicle shedding, whether the scalp needs examination, and which products or styling practices should be stopped while the hair recovers.
