What should you know about high pitch hearing test?

During standard audiometry, you listen through headphones and signal whenever you hear a tone. The tones vary in pitch and loudness, so the clinician can map the softest sounds you detect. A high-pitch loss may make speech seem unclear, particularly in background noise, even when louder low-pitched sounds remain easier to hear.

Results can be affected by earwax, middle-ear fluid, noise exposure, ageing, some medicines, or inner-ear conditions such as Meniere’s disease. One result is interpreted alongside your symptoms, ear examination, and the difference between your ears; it is not a diagnosis on its own.

Before testing, mention sudden hearing change, ringing, dizziness, ear pain, discharge, recent loud noise, and medicines. Follow the instructions about the quiet test room and respond only when you hear a tone. Ask for the result to be explained in terms of speech understanding, pitch pattern, and whether one ear differs from the other.

If earwax is suspected, do not put cotton buds or objects into the ear. A clinician can examine the ear and advise whether wax treatment or repeat testing is appropriate.

Seek prompt medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change with severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache, or new neurological symptoms. New ear discharge, intense pain, or an injury also needs timely review.
