What should you know about high dimensional flow cytometry?

A sample of blood, bone marrow, or another fluid is mixed with labelled antibodies. Cells pass through an instrument one at a time, and detectors record physical features and marker patterns. Analysing many markers together can distinguish cell groups that look similar under a microscope and can help classify blood cancers or monitor a known condition.

The result is interpreted with symptoms, examination, blood counts, microscopy, genetics, and imaging when relevant. Flow Cytometry is a laboratory method rather than a diagnosis by itself. A Bone Marrow Biopsy may provide the sample when marrow disease is being assessed.

Ask which sample is being tested, whether any preparation is needed, and when the report is expected. The laboratory may describe cell populations as present, absent, or requiring correlation with other findings. Keep the appointment where the clinician explains the report, because marker patterns need medical context and do not predict the whole course of illness on their own.

The test itself usually involves sample collection, so seek advice for bleeding that does not stop, increasing redness, swelling, drainage, fever, or worsening pain at a biopsy site.
