What should you know about high cholesterol and liver function?

The liver makes, stores, and clears cholesterol, so liver conditions can affect a lipid result. However, raised cholesterol does not by itself show that the liver is damaged. Liver blood tests measure different aspects of liver and bile-duct health, and they are interpreted with symptoms, medicines, alcohol intake, weight, diabetes risk, and other results. Ongoing cholesterol exposure can contribute to artery disease, including angina, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease, even when liver tests are normal. Obesity can be associated with both metabolic risk and fatty liver changes, but it is not a diagnosis on its own.

Ask for a full review of your lipid profile and any abnormal liver results rather than focusing on one number. Tell the clinician about prescribed medicines, supplements, herbal products, alcohol, and symptoms such as itching or yellowing of the skin. A cholesterol test may be repeated, and additional liver assessment may be arranged if results or examination suggest it. Nutrition counselling can support gradual changes to food, activity, and weight. If statin therapy is offered, follow the monitoring plan and report new symptoms instead of stopping it independently.

Get urgent medical advice for yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine, severe upper-abdominal pain, confusion, vomiting that will not settle, or unusual bleeding. Emergency care is needed for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, sudden weakness, facial drooping, or speech difficulty. These symptoms require prompt assessment and should not be explained away by cholesterol or a liver test.
