High blood pressure and throat tightness

Throat tightness with a high blood pressure reading needs careful assessment because heart, allergy and airway causes can be urgent. High blood pressure itself often causes no symptoms. Tightness may instead relate to reflux, anxiety, an allergic reaction, infection or a heart problem, and the accompanying features determine how quickly you need help.

Describe whether the feeling is inside the throat, across the neck or behind the breastbone, and whether swallowing or breathing is affected. Throat tightness with lip or tongue swelling, hives or wheezing may indicate a serious allergic reaction. Pressure spreading to the jaw, neck or arm with sweating or nausea can occur with Angina. High blood pressure can also coexist with heart or kidney disease, but the symptom does not establish a diagnosis.

Stop exertion and sit upright. If a food, medicine or sting may have triggered symptoms, move away from the suspected trigger and use an emergency allergy device if one has been prescribed, following your action plan. Do not force food or drink if swallowing is difficult. If breathing and swallowing are comfortable, record the blood pressure after resting and arrange prompt medical advice, especially for a new or recurring sensation.

Call emergency services immediately for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, blue lips, faintness, chest pressure, severe sweating, or pain spreading to the jaw or arm. Also seek emergency help for new weakness, facial drooping, confusion or speech difficulty, which can signal Stroke. Do not drive yourself or wait for the blood pressure to fall. If symptoms have settled but recur, obtain urgent clinical advice and explain the episode clearly.

Ask whether you need an allergy review, heart assessment, reflux evaluation or medicine check. Mention new foods, stings, medicines, exertion, swallowing changes, wheeze, rash and the exact timing of your blood pressure reading.
