High blood pressure pills: names and what they do

Clinicians choose from groups that lower pressure in different ways. ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers relax blood vessels and affect hormone signals. Calcium-channel blockers relax vessel walls. Thiazide-like diuretics help the body remove extra salt and water. Other groups may be suitable in particular situations, such as a heart rhythm problem, pregnancy, or kidney disease.
