High arch and foot pain: possible reasons and next steps

Short answer

High arches can concentrate pressure under the heel and forefoot, causing foot pain, calluses, ankle strain, or difficulty finding comfortable shoes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Pressure areas
Often the heel and ball of the foot
Helpful focus
Footwear fit and gradual activity changes

Pain that alters walking or creates pressure sores

Why a high arch may hurt

A high arch leaves less of the foot in contact with the ground. Pressure may therefore collect at the heel and the ball of the foot, while the ankle can roll outward more easily. Tight calf muscles, a recent change in activity, poorly fitting footwear, or a separate foot problem can add to the load. Pain may be aching, burning, sharp, or linked to particular shoes.

The pattern does not identify one diagnosis by itself. [Plantar Fasciitis](/conditions/plantar-fasciitis/) can cause heel or arch pain, while a [Stress Fracture](/conditions/stress-fracture/) may cause focused pain that worsens with loading. [Foot Pain](/symptoms/foot-pain/) that changes your walking pattern deserves a closer look.

Ways to reduce strain

Choose shoes with enough width and cushioning, and avoid suddenly increasing walking, running, or jumping. Reduce the activity that triggers pain while keeping comfortable movement. Do not cut away calluses yourself or use rigid inserts without advice. A clinician can examine your walking pattern, footwear, joint motion, skin pressure points, and tenderness.

Custom orthotics may redistribute pressure for some people, but their shape should match the foot and the problem being treated. Gentle calf and foot exercises may be useful when prescribed, with progress based on comfort and function.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment if pain persists, repeatedly returns, causes a limp, or comes with a new callus or pressure sore. Seek prompt care for sudden focused pain after increased activity, inability to bear weight, significant bruising, numbness, or a cold or discoloured foot. These features can need evaluation beyond shoe changes.

Questions for your appointment

Ask whether the pain is coming from the heel, forefoot, tendon, joint, or bone; which shoes are appropriate; and whether orthotics could help. Ask how to modify activity, which exercises are suitable, and what symptoms should stop you from loading the foot.

Questions people ask

Can high arches cause foot pain?

They can change pressure and ankle mechanics, which may contribute to pain, but the exact cause still needs assessment.

Will orthotics help every high arch?

Not necessarily; an orthotic should be selected after considering your symptoms, foot shape, and walking pattern.
