What should you know about a HiDow TENS unit?

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. Adhesive electrodes sit on the skin near, but not directly over, the painful area. The device sends adjustable pulses that create a tingling sensation. For some people, this changes how pain signals are processed and makes movement or daily activity easier.

It is a symptom-management tool, not a repair for a fracture, nerve compression, infection, or other underlying problem. Benefit varies, and a stronger setting is not automatically more useful. Skin irritation can occur where pads are placed.

Read the device instructions and begin with a comfortable setting. Place pads on clean, intact skin with space between them, and check the skin after use. Do not place electrodes across the front of the neck, over the head, across the chest, on broken skin, or where sensation is reduced. Keep the unit away from water unless its instructions specifically allow otherwise.

Ask a clinician before use if you have an implanted electrical device, a seizure disorder, reduced sensation, pregnancy-related concerns, or an unexplained new pain. Do not use it to push through worsening symptoms or to delay an assessment.

Stop using the unit for burning, persistent redness, blistering, dizziness, palpitations, or a new change in sensation. Seek medical assessment for sudden weakness, chest pain, severe unexplained pain, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening. A TENS device should not mask warning signs from a new injury.
