Short answer

Hiccups are caused by involuntary diaphragm spasms, often after eating or swallowing air, while persistent episodes can have an underlying cause.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What contracts
The diaphragm contracts involuntarily and the vocal cords close briefly
Common triggers
Full stomach, fast eating, swallowed air, fizzy drinks, and temperature changes
Book a review
For recurrent episodes, sleep disruption, weight loss, or swallowing difficulty

Common and less obvious triggers

The diaphragm may react to a full stomach, eating quickly, fizzy drinks, alcohol, sudden temperature changes, laughter, excitement, or stress. Reflux can irritate the food pipe and trigger the reflex; burning chest discomfort, sour fluid, or a cough after meals may fit [Acid Reflux](/conditions/acid-reflux/). Stomach lining irritation, called [Gastritis](/conditions/gastritis/), can also be associated with nausea or upper-abdominal discomfort.

Hiccups that keep returning or last unusually long can be linked to a medicine, nerve irritation, chest or abdominal disease, or a problem affecting the brain or metabolism. That pattern needs a clinician's assessment rather than repeated home remedies.

How to respond to a bout

Stop eating for a moment, sit upright, and take small sips of still water. Slow down meals, avoid gulping air, and reduce fizzy drinks if they trigger episodes. Note the timing, food, alcohol, medicines, and associated symptoms. Do not use frightening or forceful techniques. If reflux seems involved, ask a pharmacist or clinician whether [Acid Reflux Medication](/treatments/medical-management/acid-reflux-medication/) is suitable for you.

When hiccups need medical attention

Arrange an appointment if hiccups recur frequently, interfere with sleep or meals, cause weight loss, or come with swallowing difficulty, persistent cough, or pain. Seek urgent care for chest pain, difficulty breathing, fainting, severe abdominal pain, new weakness or confusion, repeated vomiting, or blood in vomit. Take your medicine list to the appointment.

Questions for a clinician

Ask whether your medicines or reflux could be contributing, whether you need an examination, and which treatment is appropriate. Explain whether each episode follows food, lying down, alcohol, stress, or a new medicine, and say how long it lasts.
