What should you know about hiccups and heart palpitations?

Hiccups are diaphragm spasms; palpitations are sensations such as racing, fluttering, pounding, or skipped beats. They may appear during anxiety, after stimulants, with poor fluid intake, or during an illness. Dehydration can affect circulation and make the heartbeat feel more noticeable. Palpitations can also occur with Anaemia, Iron Deficiency Anaemia, Hypoglycaemia, or Hyperthyroidism. Atrial Fibrillation is one rhythm problem that can cause an irregular heartbeat, while Heart Failure may cause breathlessness or swelling. These conditions are not diagnosed from hiccups alone.

Stop strenuous activity while symptoms are active and sit somewhere comfortable. Sip water if you can drink normally, and avoid caffeine, nicotine, energy drinks, alcohol, and decongestants until the pattern is clearer. Record when the palpitations start, how long they last, whether the rhythm feels regular, and what you were doing. Note dizziness, chest discomfort, breathlessness, fever, or missed meals. Arrange a clinical review for recurrent episodes; an examination and heart rhythm check may be needed.

Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, or marked weakness. Seek prompt medical care if the heartbeat remains very fast or irregular, episodes recur with dizziness, or you have known heart disease. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or seriously unwell.

Ask whether your medicines, thyroid function, blood count, glucose, hydration, or heart rhythm should be checked, and what symptom pattern should trigger emergency care.
