What should you know about HFEA PGT-A?

PGT-A stands for preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy. During IVF, a small sample of cells is taken from an embryo and analysed for extra or missing chromosomes. The embryo is usually frozen while the laboratory processes the sample, and a clinic may use the result when discussing which embryo to consider for transfer.

A result describes the sampled cells, not every cell in the embryo or every possible genetic condition. Embryos can contain a mixture of cells, and some results may be unclear or unsuitable for transfer. PGT-A does not test for all inherited conditions and does not replace pregnancy screening.

Ask your fertility specialist why PGT-A is being considered for your circumstances and how the result would change the plan. Discuss the chance that no embryo will be suitable for transfer, what happens when a result is unclear, and whether genetic counselling is recommended.

The laboratory may use Next-Generation Sequencing to read and compare genetic material from the embryo sample. Confirm how samples are handled, how results are reported, and how an embryo transfer would be timed. If pregnancy occurs, continue with the screening and diagnostic options offered by your maternity team.

Contact your clinic promptly after egg retrieval or embryo procedures for heavy bleeding, severe or increasing abdominal pain, breathing difficulty, faintness, fever, or rapidly increasing bloating. These symptoms may relate to the treatment cycle and need assessment rather than interpretation of a PGT-A result.

Seek specialist clarification if a report uses terms such as mosaic, aneuploid, euploid, or no result and you are unsure what they mean. Do not make a transfer decision from a laboratory label alone; the clinical team should explain the finding and its limits.
