What should you know about herbs for prostate cancer?

A product labelled natural can still contain active chemicals. An herb may change how a cancer medicine is absorbed or broken down, increase bleeding, affect blood pressure, or put strain on the liver or kidneys. Products can also vary in strength and ingredients. Evidence about a supplement may not apply to a person with prostate cancer, other illnesses or several prescriptions.

Herbs cannot be assumed to shrink a prostate tumour, prevent spread or control symptoms. Difficulty passing urine can have several causes and should be assessed rather than treated only with a supplement.

Tell your oncologist, urologist and pharmacist about every tea, capsule, powder and traditional remedy you use or are considering. Bring the container or a clear ingredient list, including combination products. The team may advise stopping a product before surgery, radiotherapy or a medicine change.

Follow the treatment plan recommended for your cancer. Depending on the disease and its extent, options may include prostate removal surgery, radiotherapy, brachytherapy, targeted radioisotope therapy or bone-strengthening therapy. Ask whether a supplement could alter a blood test or treatment decision.

Get urgent medical help if you cannot pass urine, develop severe weakness, have facial swelling or breathing difficulty after a product, vomit repeatedly, notice black stools or unusual bleeding, or become confused. Contact the cancer team about yellowing skin, dark urine, severe abdominal pain or a new rash after starting an herb.

Ask whether the exact product is compatible with your medicines, whether it should be paused around treatment, and how its ingredients might affect liver tests, bleeding or urinary symptoms. Ask what evidence-based options can support sleep, appetite, pain or treatment side effects.
