What should you know about herbs for kidney stones?

Kidney stones vary in size and position. A stone can irritate the urinary tract, obstruct urine flow, or move from the kidney towards the bladder. Flank or abdominal pain, painful urination, blood in the urine, nausea, or difficulty passing urine may occur, but symptoms do not show the stone's size or whether infection is present.

An herbal drink may increase fluid intake, but it does not reliably remove an obstruction. Some products can irritate the stomach, affect kidney function, or interact with medicines. Dehydration can make urinary symptoms harder to manage, while an obstructed infected urinary system needs medical treatment rather than home remedies.

Arrange a GP consultation if you have suspected stone symptoms, recurrent stones, or pain that is not settling. A clinician may use an examination, urine and blood tests, and imaging such as an abdominal ultrasound to assess the urinary tract. Take the product packaging to the appointment if you have already used an herb.

Drink fluids according to your clinician's advice, especially if vomiting, kidney disease, or heart disease makes fluid changes unsuitable. Do not take concentrated herbal products or stop prescribed medicines without checking first. Follow the recommended pain plan and note changes in urine, pain, temperature, and ability to pass urine.

Seek urgent medical care for fever or chills with flank pain, severe or worsening pain, repeated vomiting, marked weakness, inability to pass urine, or feeling faint. These features can accompany infection, obstruction, or dehydration and should not be treated with herbs alone.
