What it means

Vertigo is a spinning or moving sensation, sometimes with nausea, unsteadiness, hearing symptoms, or headache. Causes include Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, Meniere's Disease, Migraine, or a Middle Ear Infection. Brief attacks triggered by head movement differ from prolonged dizziness with hearing change. A remedy that causes drowsiness can increase falls.

What to do

Sit or lie down when an attack starts, move slowly, keep walkways clear, and avoid driving, heights, and machinery until balance returns. Check every supplement with a pharmacist, particularly if it causes sleepiness or you take sedatives, antihistamines, or blood-pressure medicines. Note triggers, duration, hearing changes, headache, vomiting, and recent infections. If positional vertigo is suspected, a clinician may assess whether an Epley Manoeuvre is suitable.

Get emergency help for vertigo with facial drooping, weakness, trouble speaking, severe new headache, fainting, chest pain, or inability to walk. Seek prompt assessment for new hearing loss, repeated vomiting, fever, severe ear pain, or persistent symptoms.
