What should you know about who can get hepatitis C?

How the structures involved in Hepatitis C differ from normal

Short answer

Anyone exposed to infected blood can acquire hepatitis C, so testing is based on exposure history, clinical advice, and sometimes routine screening.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Who may need testing

Testing may be advised after shared injecting equipment, an accidental needle-stick, an unsterile tattoo or piercing, or medical care involving possible blood exposure. People with a past diagnosis, abnormal liver tests, or symptoms such as unexplained Fatigue may also need assessment. Many people have no symptoms, so feeling well does not settle whether infection is present. A risk conversation is confidential and should be non-judgmental.

What you can do

Arrange a GP consultation and describe when and how a possible exposure occurred, including any previous hepatitis tests. The clinician may order an antibody test and, if appropriate, a test for the virus itself. Avoid sharing razors, toothbrushes, needles, or other items that could carry blood while you await advice. A Liver Function Test can support assessment but cannot replace hepatitis C testing.

When to seek care

Seek prompt advice after a recent blood exposure because the timing of tests matters. Obtain urgent help for yellow skin or eyes, confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or sudden severe weakness. Persistent or worsening Fatigue should be reviewed, especially with dark urine, pale stools, nausea, or abdominal discomfort.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your exposure warrants testing, which test is needed first, whether repeat testing is required, how results will be kept private, and whether your liver needs further assessment.

Questions people ask

Can someone get hepatitis C without symptoms?

Yes. Some people feel well, which is why testing after a relevant exposure can matter.

Does having a risk factor mean I have hepatitis C?

No. An exposure can indicate that testing is appropriate, but only testing can assess infection.
