Short answer

Hepatitis C can become life-threatening when ongoing infection causes advanced liver damage, but assessment and treatment can reduce this risk.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main concern
Ongoing infection can cause progressive liver damage

Serious liver disease may develop with few early symptoms
Urgency
Confusion, bleeding, or jaundice needs urgent assessment

Why hepatitis C can become serious

Some people have few or no symptoms while inflammation continues in the liver. Over time, persistent infection may lead to scarring, reduced liver function, and complications such as fluid accumulation, bleeding, confusion, or liver cancer. This progression is not inevitable for every person, and a symptom alone cannot show how much liver injury is present.

Fatigue is one possible symptom, but it has many causes. More information is available on [Hepatitis C](/conditions/hepatitis-c/) and [Fatigue](/symptoms/fatigue/). Blood tests, examination, and sometimes imaging help clinicians assess the liver.

How to protect your health

If you have a positive hepatitis C test or a past exposure, arrange a medical review rather than waiting for symptoms. Your clinician can confirm whether virus is currently present, assess liver health, discuss antiviral treatment, and plan follow-up. Avoid alcohol until you have discussed liver health with a clinician, and do not share items that could carry blood. A [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) is a suitable starting point. A [Liver Function Test](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/liver-function-test/) may be part of the evaluation.

Warning symptoms

Seek urgent medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, new confusion, extreme sleepiness, or rapidly worsening illness. These signs can indicate serious liver or gastrointestinal problems and need immediate assessment. Do not wait for a routine appointment if they occur.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether infection is currently active, whether your liver shows scarring or reduced function, and which treatment options fit your health history. Ask about medicines and supplements to avoid, follow-up testing, and symptoms that should prompt urgent help.
