What should you know about a hepatitis C antibody test?

The test is usually performed on a blood sample and looks for antibodies produced after contact with hepatitis C. A negative result makes previous exposure less likely, although the timing of a possible exposure can affect interpretation.

A positive result means the immune system has encountered hepatitis C at some point. It cannot by itself distinguish a past infection that is no longer active from infection that needs current care. Fatigue may occur with many illnesses and is not a test result.

Ask your clinician why the test was offered, when the result will be available and what happens after a positive result. A GP Consultation can put the result alongside your history and risk of recent exposure.

If current infection is suspected, further viral testing and a Liver Function Test may be considered. Follow instructions about returning for results, even when you feel well.

Get urgent medical help for vomiting blood, black stools, severe confusion, fainting or yellow skin with severe illness. Seek prompt advice after a recent possible exposure or if you develop persistent vomiting, swelling or unusual bruising.

Ask what your result means in relation to the timing of exposure, whether another test is needed, how your liver will be checked, and how you will receive follow-up.
