Hepatitis B Titer Test: What It Shows

A hepatitis B titer test measures antibodies in your blood to help show whether you have protection against hepatitis B. It is commonly used after vaccination, when vaccination records are unclear, or when a clinician needs to document immune status for work, study, pregnancy care, or another clinical reason.

The antibody usually measured for protection is hepatitis B surface antibody, often written as anti-HBs. A result showing an adequate antibody response can support that you are protected through vaccination or past resolved infection. A low or absent antibody result does not by itself diagnose hepatitis B, and it does not always mean a vaccine did not work; the timing of testing, past vaccination, and your health history all matter.

Testing for current or past infection uses a different combination of blood tests, which may include hepatitis B surface antigen and core antibody. Your clinician may order these alongside a titer when the purpose is to assess possible hepatitis B infection rather than immunity alone.

Keep a copy of the laboratory report and tell the clinician why the test was ordered, especially if it relates to previous vaccination, a workplace requirement, or contact with someone who has hepatitis B. They can decide whether no further action is needed, whether another vaccine dose is appropriate, or whether broader hepatitis B blood testing would clarify the result.

If you have not completed hepatitis B vaccination or do not know your vaccination history, discuss hepatitis B vaccination with a clinician. A liver function test may also be used when symptoms, examination findings, or other blood results raise concern about liver inflammation.

Arrange medical assessment promptly if you develop yellowing of the eyes or skin, very dark urine, pale stools, persistent vomiting, marked abdominal pain, or worsening fatigue. These symptoms can have several causes, but they may need liver and infection assessment. Seek urgent care for confusion, fainting, severe dehydration, or rapidly worsening illness.

Ask which hepatitis B marker was tested and what question the result answers: protection after vaccination, past exposure, or possible current infection. You can also ask whether your vaccination record changes the interpretation, whether repeat testing is useful, and whether you need other hepatitis B or liver blood tests.
