Hepatitis B panel test: how to read it

How the structures involved in Hepatitis B differ from normal

Short answer

A hepatitis B panel test combines several blood markers, and their pattern helps show whether infection, past exposure, immunity, or susceptibility is present.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Test type
A group of blood tests interpreted as a pattern.
Markers
Antigen and antibody results answer different questions.
Next step
Bring the full report and vaccination history to review.

What the panel examines

The panel commonly includes markers for a surface antigen, a surface antibody, and a core antibody. The antigen helps assess whether virus is currently detected. The surface antibody can indicate protection after vaccination or recovery. The core antibody can suggest past or current exposure and is interpreted with the other findings. Reports may use reactive, non-reactive, positive, negative, or an index value, so the printed reference range matters.

A panel is not a symptom test. Hepatitis B can be silent, while fatigue or dark urine may occur in some people and can have other causes. Read about [Hepatitis B](/conditions/hepatitis-b/) and [Dark Urine](/symptoms/dark-urine/).

Using your result

Ask for the full report rather than relying on a single word such as positive or negative. Your clinician will consider vaccination records, possible exposures, pregnancy, immune health, symptoms, and earlier results. They may repeat a marker, order additional testing, or request a [Liver Function Test](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/liver-function-test/) when liver inflammation is a concern. If the panel suggests you are not protected, discuss [Hepatitis B Vaccination](/treatments/preventive-care-and-vaccination/hepatitis-b-vaccination/).

When to seek care

Contact a clinician promptly after a recent blood or sexual exposure, or if you are pregnant and the result is unclear. Seek urgent assessment for yellow skin or eyes, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, or fainting. Do not wait for symptoms after a known exposure.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Which markers were included? What does each result mean together with the others? Does my pattern show infection, immunity, or susceptibility? Do I need repeat testing? Should household or sexual contacts be tested or vaccinated?

Questions people ask

Can one hepatitis B panel result diagnose infection?

The pattern of markers is more informative than one result, and a clinician may need additional testing to clarify timing or status.

Does a panel show whether I am vaccinated?

The surface antibody can support vaccine-related immunity, but the complete pattern and vaccination record provide the clearest interpretation.
