What should you know about last-stage hepatitis B symptoms?

Serious liver impairment may lead to yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine, pale stools, nausea, reduced appetite, or increasing tiredness. Fluid can collect in the abdomen or legs, causing swelling and discomfort. When waste products affect the brain, a person may become unusually sleepy, confused, forgetful, or have difficulty staying awake.

These symptoms can develop gradually or worsen quickly. They are not a reliable way to stage hepatitis B at home, and their presence does not establish a diagnosis without examination and testing. A liver function test and other assessments can help clinicians judge what is happening.

Arrange urgent medical assessment if new jaundice, abdominal swelling, unusual sleepiness, or rapid deterioration occurs. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, allergies and known hepatitis results. Do not drink alcohol or take extra pain medicines, herbal products, or someone else’s prescription unless a clinician confirms they are appropriate.

If hepatitis B is known, keep specialist follow-up even when symptoms improve. Monitoring can identify liver changes before they become obvious. A clinician may discuss antiviral treatment, monitoring, and care for complications based on the individual situation.

Call emergency services for confusion, inability to stay awake, collapse, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or breathing difficulty. Do not drive if you are confused or faint. Ask someone to stay with the person while help is arranged.

Ask whether the symptoms suggest liver failure or another problem, which tests are needed today, and whether hospital care is required. Ask how medicines should be adjusted, what changes should trigger emergency help, and how close monitoring will be arranged.
