Hemsamic tranexamic acid: what to know

Tranexamic acid works by reducing the breakdown of fibrin, the mesh that strengthens a blood clot. It may be used for heavy menstrual bleeding and other clinician-selected problems, but it is not a general remedy for every haemorrhage. The reason for bleeding must be considered alongside kidney health, past clotting problems, pregnancy, and medicines such as hormonal contraception. A brand name can vary by market, so check the active ingredient on your pack.

Follow the prescribed schedule and swallow or use the medicine in the form supplied. Never compensate for a forgotten dose by taking extra unless a clinician or pharmacist tells you to. Before starting, mention kidney disease, a history of blood clots, vision changes, seizures, or pregnancy. Note the amount and timing of bleeding, and arrange review if symptoms persist or return after treatment.

Seek emergency care for sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, a painful swollen leg, severe headache, weakness, speech trouble, confusion, or new visual disturbance. Arrange urgent assessment for bleeding that is heavy or unexplained, severe pelvic pain, faintness, or bleeding during pregnancy. A medicine that reduces bleeding should not postpone investigation of its cause.

Ask what the medicine is treating, how long the course should last, and whether your kidney function or other medicines matter. Ask what to do if bleeding continues, which side effects require stopping the medicine, and when follow-up is needed.
