Help for DOMS: what to know

Short answer
DOMS is muscle soreness and stiffness that appears after unfamiliar or strenuous exercise and improves as the muscle recovers.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- A new or harder-than-usual workout
- Best approach
- Gentle movement and gradual return
Recognising DOMS
Delayed onset muscle soreness often affects the muscles used in a new or harder activity. The discomfort may be most noticeable when moving, stretching or pressing the muscle, rather than during the exercise itself. It should gradually settle. Sharp pain during activity, immediate swelling, bruising or a clear loss of strength may point to a muscle strain or another injury instead of ordinary post-exercise soreness.
Helpful recovery steps
Keep moving gently with walking or easy range-of-motion exercises, but avoid repeating the demanding session while the muscle is painful. Drink to thirst, eat regular balanced meals and prioritise sleep. A warm shower may loosen stiffness, while a cool pack wrapped in cloth can soothe a particularly tender area. Light sports massage or guided physiotherapy may help some people, but pressure should not turn soreness into sharp pain. Return to training gradually when normal movement is comfortable.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment if soreness is severe, worsening, unusually one-sided, associated with substantial swelling or weakness, or not settling with rest. Seek urgent help for very dark urine, faintness, severe muscle swelling or inability to use the limb.
Questions for your doctor
Does this pattern fit DOMS or a muscle strain? When can I safely resume training? Would sports massage, physiotherapy or hot and cold therapy suit this injury?

Questions people ask
Should I exercise with DOMS?
Gentle movement is usually more suitable than another intense session. Stop if pain becomes sharp or your movement changes.
Can massage cure DOMS?
Massage may temporarily ease tightness for some people, but it does not replace rest, gradual loading and assessment of unusual symptoms.
