Heavy period with clots after stopping birth control

Hormonal birth control can make bleeding lighter or more predictable for some people. After stopping it, the natural cycle may return with a different flow or timing. Clots can form when blood leaves the uterus slowly, especially during heavier bleeding. They do not identify a particular diagnosis. Fibroids, adenomyosis, polyps, endometrial hyperplasia, perimenopause, or polycystic ovary syndrome may also affect bleeding, and repeated loss can contribute to iron deficiency anaemia.

Record the date you stopped birth control, each bleeding episode, product changes, clot size as best you can describe it, pain, and symptoms such as tiredness or dizziness. Take a pregnancy test if pregnancy is possible, because fertility can return after stopping some methods. Arrange an appointment if the flow remains heavy, cycles stay irregular, or bleeding occurs between periods. A clinician may check blood counts, iron, pregnancy, and possible uterine causes.

Seek urgent care if you are faint, very weak, short of breath, have severe pelvic pain, or are rapidly soaking through pads or tampons. If pregnancy is possible, bleeding with one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, or dizziness needs emergency assessment. Do not assume that stopping birth control explains bleeding that is severe, prolonged, or getting worse.
