First aid in brief

For heat syncope, lay the person flat in a cool place, raise the legs when safe, and seek help for warning signs. Protect the head from injury and do not leave them alone while they recover.

What may have happened

Heat can widen blood vessels and sweating can reduce available fluid. Standing still or rising quickly may then lower blood flow to the brain for a short time. Dizziness, nausea, tunnel vision, or weakness may warn of the episode.

Step-by-step care

Check that the area is safe, help the person lie down, and loosen restrictive clothing. Move them into shade or air conditioning, cool the skin with a damp cloth, and keep the legs supported. Offer small sips of water only after full alertness returns and swallowing is normal. Do not make them stand or walk immediately.

Red flags after fainting

Call emergency services if the person does not wake promptly, has trouble breathing, chest pain, a seizure, severe injury, new weakness, or an unusual heartbeat. Arrange medical review when the faint is unexplained, happens repeatedly, occurs during exercise, or affects someone with a known heart condition.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether heat, dehydration, low blood sugar, anaemia, or an abnormal rhythm best fits the event, and how to prevent recurrence.
