Heat Stroke Fever the Next Day: What to Know

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. A person may seem cooler after rest or cooling measures, but an ongoing or returning high temperature can mean that the body is still struggling to regulate heat. It can also be caused by an infection or another condition, so do not assume the temperature is simply a normal recovery symptom.

After heat exposure, dehydration and loss of salts can leave someone weak, dizzy, headachy, or nauseated. Heat injury can also affect the brain, muscles, kidneys, and other organs. A temperature that remains raised the following day deserves a clinician’s examination rather than home observation alone.

Fever is not a reliable way to distinguish heat stroke from an infection. The timing of the heat exposure, the highest temperature, mental alertness, urine output, medicines taken, and response to cooling all help a clinician judge the situation. Move the person to a cool place, loosen extra clothing, and use cool wet cloths or another gentle cooling method while arranging urgent medical care. Do not leave them alone. If they are confused, very drowsy, having a seizure, or unable to swallow safely, do not give food, drink, or tablets by mouth.

If the person is fully alert and can swallow, small sips of water may be reasonable while help is being arranged, but drinking should not delay care. Avoid alcohol and strenuous activity. Do not rely on fever-reducing medicine to treat suspected heat stroke; it does not correct the underlying heat injury and may be unsafe in some situations.

Seek emergency help immediately for confusion, collapse, seizure, trouble breathing, severe headache, repeated [Vomiting](/symptoms/vomiting/), inability to drink, very little urine, worsening weakness, or a temperature that stays high despite cooling. These signs can indicate serious heat illness or organ injury.

Even without those warning signs, contact an urgent medical service today if a fever continues the day after suspected heat stroke. Tell the service when the heat exposure happened, how long the symptoms lasted, the measured temperatures, cooling steps used, and any medicines or fluids taken. Ask what might explain the ongoing temperature, whether testing is needed for dehydration or organ effects, which fluids are suitable, and when normal activity can safely resume. Also ask which symptoms should prompt a return to emergency care.
