Heat rash in women: what to know

Short answer
Heat rash in women is managed by cooling and drying sweaty skin, reducing friction, and checking persistent or unusual symptoms because several conditions can look alike.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Commonly affected sites
- Skin folds, chest, waist, groin, and areas under clothing
- Main care goal
- Let sweat evaporate and limit rubbing
- Sensitive-site caution
- Check before using medicated creams on vulval or nipple skin
Where it can occur
Heat rash is a response to sweat becoming trapped or unable to evaporate. It may affect the neck, chest, back, under-breast area, waist, groin, or places rubbed by sportswear and protective garments. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, physical activity, humid weather, and tight or non-breathable fabric can increase warmth or moisture, but a rash in a woman is not automatically heat rash. Itching, tiny bumps, prickling, or redness may occur. Learn about [Heat Rash](/conditions/heat-rash/), [Skin Bumps](/symptoms/skin-bumps/), and [Skin Redness](/symptoms/skin-redness/).
Practical care
Change out of damp clothing and choose breathable fabrics with minimal seams over irritated areas. Rinse sweat away with gentle cleanser, dry carefully beneath folds, and take breaks from heat or intense activity. Avoid fragranced sprays, talc-like powders that clump, and thick products that seal in moisture. A bland moisturiser can help dry surrounding skin; [Emollient Therapy](/treatments/medical-dermatology/emollient-therapy/) provides background. Do not use medicated cream on the nipple, vulval skin, or other sensitive sites without advice. A clinician can decide whether [Topical Corticosteroids](/treatments/medical-dermatology/topical-corticosteroids/) fit the diagnosis and location.
When to get checked
Seek an appointment when the rash involves the vulva, causes significant pain, has an odour or discharge, forms blisters or open sores, or does not improve after sensible cooling and drying. Urgent assessment is appropriate for fever, rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or severe illness. A persistent rash under the breasts or in the groin may need testing for infection, eczema, or another cause rather than repeated heat-rash treatment. See [Skin Rash](/symptoms/skin-rash/) for related signs.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the location suggests heat rash or another condition, whether pregnancy or a medicine changes treatment choices, which products are safe for sensitive skin, and how to prevent repeat flare-ups.

Questions people ask
Can heat rash occur under the breasts?
Yes. Warmth, sweat, and friction can affect the skin beneath the breasts, although persistent soreness, odour, or scaling may have another cause.
Is every groin rash heat rash?
No. Heat rash is one possibility. Fungal infection, contact irritation, eczema, and other conditions can affect the groin and may need different treatment.
