What should you know about heat rash spreading on the body?

Heat rash is linked with sweat trapped near the skin surface. If heat, humidity, exercise, tight clothing or a skin fold continues, nearby ducts may also become irritated. Bumps, prickling, itch and redness can therefore appear in more than one area. This pattern does not prove that every spreading rash is heat rash; infection, allergy and other skin conditions can spread too. Compare the new areas with the original mark and notice whether they remain in hot, occluded sites.

Rest in a cool environment, change out of damp clothing and choose loose breathable fabrics. Rinse gently if sweat is present, pat dry, and keep folds dry without scrubbing. Avoid oily layers, fragranced products and scratching. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on emollient therapy or a topical corticosteroid when appropriate; product choice depends on the body site and whether the skin is broken.

Arrange a clinical review if the rash keeps spreading after cooling, repeatedly returns, or is not beginning to settle. Seek prompt care for fever, pus, yellow crust, increasing warmth, swelling, severe tenderness or red streaks. Get urgent help for breathing trouble, facial swelling, faintness or widespread blistering.

Ask whether the distribution matches heat rash, what could be causing the spread, and which treatment is safe for each affected body area. Mention new products, medicines, illness and recent sweating.
