Treatment for heat rash on the lips

Heat rash is caused by trapped sweat, but the lips have different skin and are exposed to saliva, food, cosmetics, toothpaste, and sunlight. Redness, bumps, burning, peeling, or blisters may instead reflect contact irritation, cold sores, cheilitis, or another condition. Heat can still irritate the skin around the mouth, especially with sweating or occlusive products, but a clinician should inspect persistent or unusual lip changes. Do not squeeze blisters or share lip products while the cause is unclear.

Stop newly introduced lip balms, plumping products, cosmetics, fragranced creams, and harsh toothpaste until the skin is reviewed. Rinse gently, pat dry, avoid licking or picking, and use a simple fragrance-free protective emollient on the outer lip if the skin is dry. Do not put steroid cream on the lips unless prescribed for that exact area. If blisters, tingling, crusting, or sores are present, seek advice before using a treatment because the wrong product can aggravate infection or delay diagnosis.

Arrange prompt assessment for painful grouped blisters, pus, spreading swelling, fever, or sores that interfere with eating and drinking. Emergency help is needed for sudden lip or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, or trouble swallowing. A rash that persists, repeatedly returns, or involves the inside of the mouth needs examination rather than repeated self-treatment.

Ask whether the change is on the lip surface or surrounding skin, whether a cold sore or contact reaction is possible, and which cleanser or emollient is appropriate. Mention sun exposure, dental products, new cosmetics, blisters, and medicines.
