Short answer

Heat-induced hives are itchy welts triggered by rising body temperature or sweating, managed with cooling, trigger planning and medical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How heat can trigger hives

In heat-induced urticaria, warming and sweating can prompt skin cells to release inflammatory chemicals, producing temporary raised welts and itching. Exercise, warm rooms, hot baths, fever, stress and spicy meals can all raise body heat. Hives may appear on the trunk, neck or limbs and can spread during a flare. Deeper swelling of the eyelids, lips or tongue is a different level of concern and may accompany hives.

Managing an episode

Stop the heat-producing activity, move somewhere cooler and use a cool compress. Choose light clothing and lukewarm rather than hot water. Keep a trigger diary, including exercise, illness, foods, medicines and skin products. A clinician may recommend an oral antihistamine; follow the labelled or prescribed directions and check for sedation. Treatment plans vary when attacks are frequent, widespread or difficult to control, so avoid borrowing medicines or changing doses independently.

Urgent and routine care

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, throat tightness, faintness, severe dizziness, or swelling of the tongue or mouth. Arrange prompt assessment for rapidly increasing facial swelling or hives that follow a new medicine or food. Book routine care when episodes recur, leave marks, last unusually long, or do not clearly relate to heat. A rash with fever, bruising, blistering or significant pain should also be examined.

Questions for your doctor

Does my timing and rash pattern fit heat-induced hives? How can I distinguish ordinary welts from deeper swelling? Should I keep an antihistamine available? Which activities or temperatures should I modify, and when is emergency care needed?
