Short answer

Heat exhaustion skin symptoms often include heavy sweating with cool, pale, clammy skin, though the skin may also feel flushed or develop goosebumps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Skin pattern
Cool, pale, clammy, flushed, or gooseflesh-covered skin can occur.
First step
Move to a cool place, loosen clothing, and cool the skin.
Emergency signs
Confusion, seizure, fainting, or inability to drink needs emergency help.

What heat exhaustion skin symptoms can look like

These changes happen as the body tries to release heat through sweating and shifts blood flow toward the skin. Sweat can leave the skin damp, while dehydration may reduce the amount of urine and cause a dry mouth or strong thirst.

What the skin changes mean

Skin findings are only one part of the picture. Heat exhaustion may also cause weakness, headache, dizziness, nausea, muscle cramps, a fast pulse, or unusual tiredness after time in a hot or humid setting.

Sweating is still common in heat exhaustion because the body can usually regulate temperature to some degree. Confusion, a seizure, loss of consciousness, or very hot skin with a changed mental state can signal heatstroke, which is an emergency.

A person with heat exhaustion may also have dehydration. Dark urine, marked thirst, and light-headedness can support that concern, but skin appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

What to do when these symptoms start

Move the person into shade or an air-conditioned place, loosen or remove extra clothing, and help them rest. Apply cool, wet cloths to the neck, armpits, and groin, or use a fan while dampening the skin.

If the person is awake, alert, and able to swallow, offer frequent small sips of cool water or an oral rehydration drink. Avoid alcohol and very sugary drinks. Do not leave the person alone while monitoring their breathing, alertness, sweating, and skin temperature.

Improvement should begin after cooling and fluids. If symptoms continue, worsen, or return after activity in the heat, arrange prompt medical assessment.

When to seek urgent care

Call emergency services if the person is confused, fainting, having a seizure, difficult to wake, unable to drink, or showing signs of heatstroke such as very hot skin and a changed mental state. Place an unconscious person on their side and do not give them anything by mouth.

Seek medical care promptly for persistent vomiting, severe weakness, worsening headache, breathing difficulty, chest pain, or symptoms that do not improve with cooling. Older adults, young children, pregnant people, and people with heart, kidney, or other long-term conditions may need earlier assessment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what may have triggered the episode, whether your medicines or health conditions increase heat risk, and how much fluid is appropriate for you. Share when the sweating or skin change began, what the skin looked and felt like, how much you drank, and whether urine became darker or less frequent.

Questions people ask

Can heat exhaustion cause a skin rash?

Heat and sweat can irritate the skin and cause prickly heat, but a rash is not required for heat exhaustion. Treat the whole pattern of symptoms and move to a cooler place.

Should I be worried if sweating stops?

A sudden change from sweating to very hot skin, especially with confusion or unusual drowsiness, may indicate heatstroke. Call emergency services and start cooling while waiting for help.

How is heat exhaustion different from dehydration?

Dehydration is a loss of fluid, while heat exhaustion is an illness caused by heat stress that can include fluid and salt loss. They can occur together.
