Heartburn relief during pregnancy

Short answer
During pregnancy, heartburn relief usually starts with smaller meals, upright posture, and clinician-approved medicines when needed.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why pregnancy can trigger heartburn
Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscle between the food pipe and stomach, allowing stomach contents to move upward. As the womb grows, pressure on the stomach may add to reflux, especially after a large meal or when lying down. A burning feeling behind the breastbone, sour fluid in the mouth, burping, or an irritated throat can fit this pattern. Heartburn is a symptom; it does not by itself identify a separate condition such as acid reflux, gastritis, hiatus hernia, obesity, or peptic ulcer.
Steps that may help
Try modest meals more often, eat slowly, and remain upright after eating. Avoid lying down soon after food, and notice whether spicy, fatty, acidic, or caffeinated items trigger symptoms for you. Raising the upper body during sleep may help; use a safe, comfortable arrangement rather than compressing your abdomen. Do not start, stop, or share a medicine without checking its pregnancy suitability. A pharmacist, midwife, obstetric clinician, or doctor can review your symptoms and other medicines before recommending an antacid or acid-reducing treatment. See Heartburn for symptom context and Acid Reflux Medication for treatment information.
When to get medical help
Arrange medical advice if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, make eating difficult, or do not improve with simple measures. Seek urgent care for severe or persistent chest pain, trouble breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or difficulty swallowing. Chest discomfort in pregnancy should not be assumed to be heartburn when it feels unusual or intense.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which products and ingredients are suitable at your stage of pregnancy, how to space them from prenatal supplements, and what symptoms would warrant a review. Bring a list of medicines, supplements, trigger foods, and the times symptoms occur.

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy heartburn harm the baby?
Heartburn itself is uncomfortable but is not usually a sign that the baby is being harmed. Persistent symptoms still deserve advice so you can eat, drink, and sleep adequately.
Should I use a home remedy?
Discuss homemade remedies and supplements with a clinician because natural does not automatically mean suitable during pregnancy.
