Heartburn in the last week of pregnancy can worsen because the stomach has less room and reflux increases, but severe or unusual symptoms need assessment. Burning behind the breastbone, sour fluid, and discomfort after meals can be managed with practical changes and maternity advice. Heartburn does not confirm that labour is about to start.

Late pregnancy can put pressure on the stomach, while hormones relax the valve between the stomach and food pipe. Lying down after eating may make acid travel upward. Acid reflux is a common explanation, but gastritis, a hiatus hernia, or a peptic ulcer can produce similar pain. Sudden severe upper abdominal pain with headache or visual symptoms needs urgent discussion.

Eat modest portions, remain upright after meals, and use an approved safe position to raise your upper body when resting. Avoid foods and drinks you have identified as triggers. Check any antacid or acid reflux medication with a pharmacist, midwife, or doctor, particularly if you take iron or other regular medicines.

Contact your maternity service if heartburn prevents sleep, limits food or fluids, or does not improve with recommended measures. Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, breathing difficulty, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, severe upper abdominal pain, severe headache, visual changes, sudden swelling, heavy bleeding, fluid loss, or reduced fetal movement.

Ask which relief products are suitable now, how to separate them from iron or other medicines, and which symptoms should take you directly to the maternity unit. Mention your blood pressure history, swelling, headache, and any change in fetal movement.
